Purpose:
Coordinates network management activities and functions for a designated department or program to ensure that its goals and objectives dependent on a functional network are met. This role is expected to coordinate with personnel at all levels, whether internal to the department or program, from CCIT, or from the campus Network Managers group. This will be accomplished in accordance with priorities, time limitations, funding limitations or other specifications.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
Network management is the process by which individuals use information, software, hardware, policies and procedures to plan, configure, operate, optimize and trouble-shoot networks of communicating devices. Network management at the University of Arizona is performed by two groups: CCIT Telecommunications; and the members of the campus Network Managers group.
CCIT Telecommunications is responsible for network management of common facilities, i.e. those provisioned to connect internal campus groups and the campus as a whole to external networks. This includes network management of:
- the inter-building WAN, hereafter called UAnet, operated as a campus backbone;
- LANs created as intra-building backbones to connect multiple workgroup LANs to UAnet;
- UAnet external connectivity to other WANs, including dialup for LAN access or terminal emulation;
- media and network equipment provided by request to create a Network Manager's workgroups (LANs).
Campus Network Managers are responsible for network management of department or program facilities, i.e. those provisioned to connect their personnel. This includes:
- any connections to external networks or other campus groups not via UAnet;
- connection of end-user equipment (usually computers);
- operation of the workgroup LAN(s) that support the operations of their department(s) and/or program(s).
A Network Manager's use of CCIT's LAN provisioning, problem diagnosis, repair, or planning consultation services does not construe an abrogation of the above responsibilities.
Examples of Duties:
- Maintains an inventory of end-user equipment, including: device's manager contact info, device's location, make/model, operating system(s), IP address, IP name, NIC(s) MAC ID;
- Participates in the campus Network Managers group;
- Registers new or changed network addresses with the appropriate authority by emailing iprequest@arizona.edu
- Assists the networked community to protect itself from threats to continued operation. These include those not of malicious intent such as end user equipment that is over consuming shared network resources;
- Informs managers of end-user equipment of applicable statutes, University and departmental policies, and recommended practices for operations while on the network;
- Assists in operating, securing, and improving UAnet;
- Reports UAnet trouble to CCIT Telecommunications;
- Acts as liaison between end-users, the campus Network Managers, and CCIT Telecommunications to represent needs, concerns, and future plans on networking matters;
- Remain knowledgeable of current networking technologies, practices, and implementations on campus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of principles of operation of LANs in use in the department or program;
- Knowledge of UA Network Manager group and CCIT Telecommunications procedures;
- Skill in configuration and use of common internet applications such as email, news, FTP, Telnet, and WWW clients;
- Ability to effectively communicate.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Successfully installing and configuring a NIC, IP client services, and common Internet applications on a workstation participating in a 10BaseT Ethernet LAN having an ISP connection;
- Understand the components and their relationships in the operation of a LAN.
