The UA Network Managers (NetMgrs) is an organization of network administrators from campus-wide departmental units who come together to share technical expertise in networking and related IT issues. Network Managers may act as an advisory body to the Security Incident Response Team (SIRT) and UITS regarding network connected devices and the use of the network. Network Managers participate in a variety of campus teams to help shape the Campus IT as a body.
The mission of the UA Network Managers (NetMgrs) is to collaborate with other Network Managers, UITS and the University community, to develop, manage and support the campus network and to assist in developing Network Managers skills through training and other cooperative efforts.
Network Managers (NetMgrs) are university employees, who have been assigned to manage a portion of the campus network related to a particular department or college. Units or departments should assign a network manager and one alternative network manager.
Membership in Network Managers is open to all UA employees who are or who may become responsible for the administration of a LAN and whose job functions also include computing consulting and/or maintenance. All members are voting members on issues relative to the purpose and mission of the group.
The role of the Network Manager is described in the "Network Manager's Role" document. It is suggested that members subscribe to the Netdiscuss listserve to keep up with current issues.
Network Managers elect four officers; Chair-elect, Secretary, Web Coordinator, and Training Coordinator. Term of office is one University fiscal year. The Chair-elect becomes chair one year after being elected in. Re-election is available for all positions with only the Chair having to step aside for one year as chair but may be elected in as Chair-elect.
The Chair is the leader who invites guests, conducts meetings, and acts on behalf of Network Managers as the liaison to the CIO and University organizations. The Chair reports the status of these meetings such as the Information Security Advisory Board (ISAB) to Network Managers. The Chair will provide the status report of other officers in their absence.
The Chair-elect becomes Chair one year after being elected. Chair-elect duties are to support and represent the Chair as necessary, fulfill the duties of the Chair or Secretary in either's absence, and act as the Net-Vision Coordinator reporting the monthly status of each operating sub-committee.
The Secretary shall record the meetings, organize meeting rooms and distribute minutes electronically to the Netdiscuss' listserv before the next general meeting.
The Web Coordinator develops and maintains the NetMgrs web page with appropriate archive, meeting minutes, membership, and information links to pertinent University security and policy documents; as well as other useful information for the Network Managers. The Training Coordinator develops and arranges training opportunities, and will provide training reports at each monthly meeting. Funding allocation reports will be made available upon request. The Training Coordinator may use at their discretion, a group of Network Managers to form a training committee.
At times issues will come up requiring a small working subset of the group to investigate and report back to the main body. The Chair-elect shall in the role of Net-vision coordinator, have the authority to form committees for such specific issues with the consensus of the membership. Committees shall serve only for specific duration, but not beyond the fiscal year end, unless term is extended by reaffirmation. Any member shall be eligible to serve on committee.
Nominations and general elections for Officers are held on a yearly basis. Nominations will take place in May. Officer elections will take place at the June meeting and positions occupied in July. Nominations are taken from the general Network Managers active membership. A simple majority of those present is necessary to declare a winner.
A special election or appointment will be held, as needed, in the event that an Officer vacates the position before the designated term of office has expired. Nominations will be solicited from the general membership. If a special election is needed it will take place at the next general meeting following the announcement of the position vacancy.
Meetings of Network Managers are held the first Thursday of every month. Notices of meetings, meeting agendas, and meeting locations will be announced to the general membership via the NetDiscuss listserv.
Meetings are conducted by the elected Chair and Co-chair who work closely with the membership. Status reports are provided by UITS Network Group, Security Incident Response Team, the Chair, Chair Elect, and Training Coordinator. Guest speakers and vendors are scheduled to present information on varied technology subjects. Open forum is provided for members to voice new items.
The order of the agenda is determined by the Chair and sent out prior to the meeting. Any changes to that order must be approved by show of hands at the meeting as item one.
From either the floor and be seconded or as outcome from report made by committee.
Passed if garnering a simple majority of votes present at the meeting.
Reviewable by referral to committee upon motion being made, seconded, and passed by simple majority present at a regular meeting.
